A fuel card is a payment card used for diesel and on-road expenses that provides negotiated pricing at participating stops and produces itemized transaction records.

Beyond discounts, the practical benefit is the record: transactions arrive itemized with location, gallons and price, which supports both IFTA reporting and expense tracking without collecting paper.
Cards are also used to issue payment codes for lumpers and advances against a load.
For example, say your card gets 30 cents off a gallon at the stops you use, and the truck buys 1,500 gallons a month. That saves 1,500 × $0.30 = $450 a month, or $450 × 12 = $5,400 a year. If the card has a $15 monthly fee, you still come out $450 − $15 = $435 a month ahead.
The record is worth money too. Every swipe lists the gallons and the state, the two things your IFTA return is built from, so your fuel records do not depend on a pile of paper receipts. Keep fuel and other charges apart on the statement so your fuel cost per mile is easy to see.
