Headhaul

A headhaul is the primary, better-paying direction of a lane, where freight demand exceeds available trucks.

Lanes are rarely balanced. More freight moves in one direction than the other, and the heavier direction pays better because trucks are scarcer relative to loads.

Planning around headhaul and backhaul pairs, rather than individual loads, is how experienced dispatchers keep revenue per total mile high.

The imbalance is structural rather than seasonal. Freight follows population and manufacturing, so regions that consume more than they produce absorb trucks, and rates out of them fall. This is why some markets are reliably hard to leave — the trucks that delivered there all need loads out at the same time. Building a lane strategy means pairing a strong headhaul with a tolerable backhaul, not chasing the best single rate on a board.
