Utilisation is the share of available time a truck spends earning revenue, and it determines how much of your fixed cost is spread across paying miles.

Two carriers with identical rates and identical cost per mile can end a year very differently if one keeps its trucks loaded and the other does not.
Downtime has many sources — maintenance, waiting for a load, home time, detention — and only some are worth eliminating. Distinguishing them requires recording where the days went.
