Because the trailer goes direct, transit is faster and handling damage less likely than in LTL.
Pricing is per mile or all-in for the movement, which makes rate per mile the natural comparison unit and cost per mile the natural break-even.
Truckload is the segment most owner-operators and small fleets serve, and it is the reason rate per mile is the industry's default unit of comparison. One trailer, one shipper, one receiver, one price. It also means one truck is committed for the whole movement, so utilisation — how much of the week the trailer is loaded and moving — matters as much as the rate itself.
